Noelle AbbottNoelle Abbott

Noelle is a third-year joint doctoral student at San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego and is also the Lab Manager of the Language and Neuroscience Group (LaNG). She received her Master’s degree in 2018 from the University of California, Davis in psycho/neurolinguistics and from that experience became interested in studying impaired speech processing and behavioral variability in Aphasia. Her current research focuses on investigating the neuroanatomical basis for behaviorally demonstrated cognitive impairments using perfusion imaging and MRI. In addition to that, she also has an interest in Specific Language Impairment and plans to work with this population at some point. Noelle loves both research and teaching, so in the future, she hopes to remain in academia at an institution similar to SDSU. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, camping, travelling, and going on adventures with her terrier mix, Gypsy!

Niloofar Akhavan

Niloofar(or Niloo) is a fifth year joint doctoral student at San Diego State University and University of California San Diego. She received her Master’s degree from Koç University in Turkey in 2016. She is interested in the behavioral and neurobiological interplay among language and cognition. She approaches this issue by studying neurologically healthy monolingual and bilingual individuals and those with stroke-induced left hemisphere damage. Recently she has gained a strong passion to investigate language and cognitive impairment early after stroke as well as accelerated and persistent declines over the years after the event. She enjoys working with younger researchers in the lab and she is eager to develop her teaching skills so that she can pursue her dream career in academia. She also enjoys outdoor activities so you can find her on hiking trails, her yoga mat or the volleyball courts when she is not working.

Carolyn Baker

Carolyn is a fourth-year joint doctoral student at San Diego State University and University of California San Diego. She received her Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Florida and her Master’s in Linguistics from Florida International University. She is interested in investigating the role of delayed lexical activation in the processing of complex structures by individuals with Broca’s aphasia. Her current research project examines different ways that may relax the temporal demands during syntactic processing to establish more timely syntactic dependencies and improve final comprehension by individuals with aphasia. In the future, she’s interested in exploring the structural and functional changes in the brain due to aphasia and aging and how these relate to impairments in language processing and cognitive functions. In her free time, Carolyn likes to paint, cook, eat Pho, speak Portuguese, and hike!

Christina SenChristina Sen

Christina is a first-year joint doctoral student at San Diego State University and the University of California San Diego. She received her Bachelor’s of Arts from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She is interested in speech perception and processing in individuals with aphasia. Additionally, she hopes to explore these mechanisms in caregivers’ response to impaired speech. She intends to use pupillometry as a method for understanding the underlying processes of language and cognition. She also hopes to expand the research on best practices of aphasia treatment. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, making music playlists, and going to the beach.
